Frazer was one of the great scholars of mythology and his translations and research has laid the foundations in the field of classical mythology. His addition to the Loeb Library is an excellent word for word translation supplemented with references to related tales from other lands. A great reference for both the classicist and the folklorist.

D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Myths Review

D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Myths

Several years ago my husband and I were disappointed to find that the d'Aulaire's book had gone out of print. (We wanted to be able to read it to our children.) We found a very used copy and bought it because, despite this copy's poor condition, the book was very hard to find. Now we will be able to replace it with a copy that is in one piece.
The stories are well researched and well told. The illustrations are great--if you are familiar with other works by the d'Aulaires you will know what I mean. This is a great Norse mythology for children.

The Norse myths are some of the greatest stories of all time. Weird monsters, thoroughly human gods, elves and sprites and gnomes, with grim giants nursing ancient grudges lurking behind—the mysterious and entrancing world of Norse myth comes alive in these pages thanks to the spellbinding storytelling and spectacular pictures of the incomparable d'Aulairse. In this classic book, the art of the Caldecott Award—winning authors of d'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, a longtime favorite of children and parent, reaches one of its pinnacles. It offers a way into a world of fantasy and struggle and charm that has served as inspiration for Marvel Comics and the Lord of the Rings.

A Treasury of Children's Literature Review

Ok, so I'm a little disturbed by some of the reviews here. These are the classics, and you should read them to your kids. Dark? Maybe, but no darker than reading the old testament or anything else like that. It's literature, children have been reading these stories for GENERATIONS and have turned out OK. And you know what? The original version of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm written in 1812 DID have Rapunzel giving birth to twins! These stories are enriching, they are stories of right and wrong, good triumphing over evil, and magic. You can't have great stories without these story lines, and in order to make the stories good - sometimes they have to be a little scary. This book is beautifully illustrated and will be a fantastic keepsake for your children. My little girl loves it. On top of the stories there are poems too, so if you feel need to hold off for some of the 'scarier' stories, get them for the poetry too!

Mythology: The Illustrated Anthology of World Myth and Storytelling Review

Mythology: The Illustrated Anthology of World Myth and Storytelling

This massive coffee-table style book gives a good overview of some of the major mythologies in the world. Overall, it has both good and bad points, with the good generally outweighing the bad.
The good points include the wide range of mythological stories that are related. While Greek mythology - certainly the most well-known and influential in Western culture - gets more space than any other culture (over one hundred pages), there is plenty of space dedicated to the whole world of mythology: Egyptian, Babylonian, Norse, Chinese, Indian and Japanese amongst them. A wide range of illustrations and photos help tell the stories.
Although wide-ranging, I think there are some noticeable gaps, both within specific sections (for example, no story of Eros and Psyche in the Greek myths) and significant types of myths that are neglected. It would have been interesting to see a little about the Arthurian legends, which are a big part of British mythology. The other thing that is missing is any sort of comparisons. While many cultures had creation and flood stories, there is little direct commentary on the similarities or differences. It would have also been interesting to see some discussion on parallels between myths and the stories of the Bible.
Of course, this book is big enough as it is, and editing decisions needed to be made. While this book suffers from the flaw of incompleteness, it does not have flawed writing, which makes it a good book although (literally) not a light read.

Mythology of the World Review

Mythology of the World

Since I was a small child my mind was perplexed with simple questions.
Whenever my crazy cranium came up with questions I would always turn to my mom who in my world knew everything. Now just imagine in the early years of man how they tried to explain common day problems that even today the simplest modern day child could answer. We natural label what we can't explain as a ghost, monster or god, and so did early humans but in the shape and form of mythology.
Neil Philip's Mythology of the world is mostly for people who want to learn more about the cultures of the world. The genre of this book is historical fiction based on facts and cultures around the world. This book is also informative because it helps you learn more of a certain part of the world.
Neil Philip's Mythology of the world is book about mythology around the world in certain areas and time periods. Neil Philips organizes the books information by continents and time period using a detailed map of the world with keys that show you the terrain and region you are going to be reading about. Neil Philip also uses illustrations and photos of artifacts to give you a feel of how their environment affected how they lived, what the believed in, what they saw and created. This book also includes little interesting facts that help you understand the culture more and their certain way of life.
A contrast that I can compare this book to is Evolution by Ryan Day explaining that mythology is jus t something that we create to entertain ourselves while Neil Philip's explains that mythology is effected but geography and religion not something that can be simply be made up. One good strength about this book is that it has maps that picture and keys to help you see the landscape and how it affects the Native people. Another great feature is that it gives you little facts about the cultures of a certain area helping you see how the myth is affected by culture. Another great feature is that it has illustrations and photos that creates an image in your head giving you a feel for the myth is about. One flaw of the book is that it could use a better table of contents that is better arranged so that is easer for the readers. All in all, this book is wonderful for a history project on a certain area or just to learn new cultures, people and great myths using rich illustrations, pictures and diagrams. In my opinion this book derives 5 stars.
