I've followed Detweiler's stuff, ever since he published The Tree of Life - an overambitious novel, but full of gems. It made me want to read more, so I bought his latest. It's a book for those who love the outdoors. This book is definitely not for someone who is a passive thinker, or for someone who balks at early morning fly fishing for trout. Here is the plot: A down and out fishing guide reels in a nasty CEO (Enron alert). They go at each other, relentlessly. I liked the tension between the two, and at the same time, I liked thinking about the scenery - the great outdoors! Who wouldn't want to escape the daily drudgery to be out in the wilds! The tension builds when the two of them hike to a lake high up in the mountains (think allegory)and try to work out their differences. The CEO is insufferable, but that makes the tension work well. It is clear that the author's heart is with the guide. In sum, it is a book for thinkers and those that love the outdoors. This is Detweiler's niche - writing about the outdoors and about interpersonal conflicts - and I for one can't wait to read his next book.
