Vibrant and beautiful Alyssa Brown is married to the wrong man and living the wrong life. Her husband, a man who has forgotten how to smile, prefers their Washington home to the quirky Virginia farm that has stolen his wife's heart. As time moves forward, Alyssa begins spending more time at the farm than she spends with her husband.
Alyssa, now more given to teaching than to acting, immerses herself in the artist retreat down the road from Finally Farm called Limespring. She becomes a part of the group, even directing their annual Follies performance.
Problems emerge when she catches the eye of Tug Palifax, a talented sculptor who has come to the retreat in search of a return to more basic art. It is suggested that Tug begin drawing at Finally Farm, since he has fallen in love with the horses there and Alyssa can offer help with his rough sketches. It doesn't take long for Tug to feel he's fallen in love with Alyssa too.
Although she attempts to do the right thing, she realizes her marriage is dead and that her feelings for Tug have gotten out of control. Overwhelmed, Alyssa withdraws from Tug. She has no idea the bizarre turn her life is about to take.
Author John Jaffe has written a romantic yet realistic novel about a huge transition in a middle-aged woman's life. Also the author of Thief of Words, he paints a broad enough canvas to animate Alyssa, Darryl and Tug as they hash out what is to remain once their relationship war ceases. This novel is perfectly paced and intelligent - recommended reading for the discriminating fiction lover.
