The Macarthur Topical Bible Review

There is no index to this Bible which I think is totally bizarre. No table of contents, nothing. This poses a problem if you do not correctly know how a certain topic is classified.
For instance if you look up "Jubilee" in this Bible you won't find anything. If you search your brain and come up with "Year of the Jubliee" then you're in luck, there are scriptures listed. However under Jubliee there is nothing to direct you to the correct topical listing (such as a "see Year of Jubilee"). And since there's no index anywhere in this book, you'll never know if you've searched under the wrong heading or if the book simply doesn't cover that topic.
I found this aspect frustrating enough to return the book. I can't operate like that. I think the book is designed to supplement the MacArthur Study Bible which I don't have.
I'm giving it 3 stars however because if it had an index (as a topical bible should!), it would be an excellent study aid. I like the layout of the book, and the font and so on - very easy to read. Also note that this book is based on the KJV or NKJV (one of the two, I can't remember now which one).

Kid's Life Application Bible NLT (hc) Review

If you are looking for a Bible that is easy to understand (this is the New Living Translation which reads very much like the Living Bible) for a "kid," i.e., preteen, you might want to look for a different Bible than this. My wife and I both believe this would be a great first Bible for a young teen not raised in a godly home, but several of the themes in the "Sticky Situations" are a little to "sticky" for a preteen. (Our credentials for this assessment? A married daughter with 3 children, a 23 year old son, a 15 year old son, and 20 years of ministry combined with the academic ingredients, blah, blah blah!) :)
A few of the "Sticky Situations" from the approximately 50 that are found at various places in the "Kid's Bible" that make this Bible more suitable for a teen than a preteen...
Example #1: This one is placed in the Song of Solomon on page 730..."A few years ago, you weren't interested in the opposite sex. In fact, you didn't want anything to do with them. Lately, however, you've been changing and have even found yourself thinking about love and sex. The DJs on your favorite radio station talk about sex all the time..."
Example #2: On page 1012..."Lately, you've been having fun with some of the kids who live a few blocks away. You've spent some time with them after school and on the weekend. Recently, they have been talking about forming a club. The only problem is that there's an initiation..."
Example #3: On page 1221..."You are not allowed to see PG-13 movies. When you asked your parents if you could go to a movie tonight, they said OK because the movie is rated G. Your dad drops you and your friends off at the theater, and you all buy your tickets. But once inside, your friends walk past the G movie and head for one rated PG-13..."
The "Sticky Situations" vignettes are a helpful way to encourage the young reader to evaluate their heart in light of God's Word using real life situations, and for that it is very commendable, but not for a preteen.

The Chronological Study Bible: New King James Version Review

The Chronological Study Bible: New King James Version

The new Thomas Nelson Chronological Study Bible is more than I expected. Swirling around the publishing date of this new Study Bible was much controversy. Many people were skeptical about it and I admit so was I. However, if you purchase this Bible, I think your skepticism will subside (mine has).
I've been pouring myself into this Bible, wandering how long it would take me to review it. However, I can't approach this as if it were a normal fiction or non-fiction book. For me to read every page of this Bible, and then comment on it would take months. I have though, thoroughly looked at, worked with and studied this Bible. In fact I was up past midnight last night pouring into it! Below is a synoptic view of this Bible, starting with what it is.
Before cracking this Bible open, I expected it to be a Bible set up in the Chronological Authorship of the Scriptures. If this were the case, Job most likely would have been first, it being the first of the Biblical books written. However, the Chronological order is of the Biblical Narrative, not of the authorship. It also follows the narrative History of the entire world, placing the Biblical events into a time line, which we can (due to History class) better place in our minds when it happened. The Bible is divided into Nine Epochs (or ages of the Earth). The Epochs Being: Epoch 1: Creation- 2000 B.C.; Epoch 2: 2000-1500 B.C.; Epoch 3: 1500-1200 B.C.; Epoch 4: 1200-930 B.C.; Epoch 5: 930-586 B.C.; Epoch 6: 586-332 B.C.; Epoch 7: 332-37 B.C.; Epoch 8: 37 B.C.- A.D. 30; Epoch 9: A.D. 30-100.
Within these eras, the Chronological Narrative of the Earth and the Bible is placed. Instead of reading the Scriptures as separate books, this places the entire Bible on one Narrative time line.
I was skeptical at first, because I didn't know this was the approach of this Study Bible before I read it. I thought it would be the same feel as a normal Bible, so I wandered why I should bother spending my money on a product that simply re-arranged the Bible by the first books written to the last books written. However, placed in this narrative chronology, it brings the Scripture into a whole new light! You can follow for example David and his Psalms. We see an event happening to David and we can see the Psalm written by David, directly after the event! That in and of itself allows me to understand the particular Psalm as well as David better! It opens the eyes of the reader to a whole new plain of Biblical understanding.
I believe that Thomas Nelson has done well with this Bible also, because they understand the importance of story to my generation and the generations after me. Connecting to story is a HUGE way for my generation to connect with God. Placing the Bible in it's narrative chronological order will speak to people of my generation that a normal Bible won't.
Also, seeing the Scriptures in this ways brings a depth of Study that other Study Bibles don't bring. It incorporates the history of the world along side the Biblical History, helping the reader to better understand the cultural context of a particular piece of Scripture.
There are MANY features that I haven't even mentioned, all of which bring amazing things to this Bible. Some a person could do without, but they are all pretty interesting none-the-less. Here is what you'll also learn about (taken from back cover): Agriculture and Herding, Architecture and Building, Arts and Literature, Beliefs and Ideas, Cults and Supernatural, Culture and Society, Daily Life and Customs, Food and Drink, Geography and Environment, Health and Medicine, Marriage and Family, Plants and Animals, Politics and Government, Religion an Worship, Science and Technology. All of these features are placed in little boxes or bubbles in and around the text. My only issue is that at points it feels very cluttered and hard to follow. Once you get used to navigating the scriptures as well as these extra boxes and bubbles, it connects and makes sense, but it can be difficult at times.
Lastly, the layout of the Scriptures can be difficult to understand. If you are trying to find a specific passage from memory of where it was in your original Bible, chances are you won't find it. Unless you look at the very back of the Bible, which gives (in Biblical order) the pages certain portions of scripture can be found. It takes awhile to learn how to use, but once you do, this Bible is quite incredible. Read it as a story and it will make reading/understanding this Bible a whole lot easier.

The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible, NKJV: Inspirational Applications for Living Your Faith Review

The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible, NKJV: Inspirational Applications for Living Your Faith

Much of this book is a revision of Max Lucado's earlier Devotional Bible. Here devotionals have been moved to bigger type and given their own pages. In the earlier book, these were put into side notes, along side the Biblical text. I was not able to determine if every note has been carried over or whether any new material has been inserted; however, the pages I did check, showed little change in text. The other change was a change in Bible Translation. The earlier book was based on the NCV, the currently available book is based on the NKJV. Both are good translations, though in the past Max Lucado seemed to favor the NCV.
Having said this, the book is worth having if you do not have the earlier text or want an easier to read compilation of the same material. I have enjoyed reading the devotionals that have made Max Lucado famous. I trust the same will be true of others.

The Everyday Life Bible: The Power of God's Word for Everyday Living Review

The Everyday Life Bible: The Power of God's Word for Everyday Living

(More customer reviews)
I will preface this by saying that I am just beginning my path back to God and that I have tried reading many Bibles but often felt like I was left feeling like "yeah, that's all well and good but what does this have to do with my life right now?".
Last fall, I lost my job. That was a devastating event for me (which, in retrospect, turned out to be a blessing). I had tremendous anger -- at my former employer, at my family that seemed unwilling to help, at my husband, at the world... While "consoling myself" by indulging in a trip to Barnes and Noble -- one of my favorite haunts -- something drew me to the aisle full of Bibles.
I picked up this Bible and flipped it open and what I read -- both from the Scripture and from Ms. Meyers -- really spoke to me. No matter the subject, Ms. Meyers has a way of discussing it that tells me that she has been there and struggled with the same things I struggle with. She is able to make even the most difficult passages seem relevant and is able to tie it into every day real world life.... thus the name.
By reading this Bible, I have been able to find peace, grow in faith, develop stronger relationships and start being the person I know that God wants me to be.
I think many people read the Bible but after they are done reading, they put it away and go on with life as usual. This Bible makes it difficult to just "put away" because on every page, you are guaranteed to read something that will tie into something that is currently happening in your life. THAT, to me, is truly what sets this Bible apart from all the rest.
