Biblical Errancy: A Reference Guide Review

This reference guide is particularly useful for quick location of verses and concepts that arise in discussions or debates, although it provides satisfying reading all by itself. A simple rating system gives the reader the best verse(s) to use in addressing a particular topic. The section on Jesus has been enlarged and given special attention, particularly in the area of alleged OT prophecies of the coming of a Messiah . Want to know what extrabiblical sources, such as Josephus or Tacitus, had to say about Jesus or early Christianity? They are given critical scrutiny here. As McKinsey says in his introduction, "...if you are tired of having Bible-quoting friends, relatives, and acquaintances toss Scripture in your face and would like to have an avalanche of information to toss in theirs....

This guide has been compiled specifically to meet this need. This work addresses virtually every significant dilemma of the Bible; arranges them by topic; and delineates the problems within each. Besides its handy alphabetical organization of subject matter, "Biblical Errancy" has many other user-friendly features: it arranges the cited verses within a subject heading in the order in which they appear in the Bible, from "Genesis" to "Revelation"; it uses a system of marking verses with one, two, or three asterisks to indicate their importance to the topic under consideration; and it has many cross-references to related areas of interest. Although many books critique the Bible from a wide variety of perspectives, none have been structured in such a manner as to provide a virtually exhaustive body of critical information that can be retrieved on a moment's notice on nearly every biblical topic imaginable. The volume and scope of the material discussed is such that anyone having any interest whatsoever in Scriptures will find something of value in these pages.

This is a collection of essays from skeptics, edited by Paul Kurtz and issued on the 25th anniversary of CSICOP (the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal). The essays are as follows:
Introduction: The Founding of the Skeptical Movement (Paul Kurtz)
=I. Twenty-Five Years of CSICOP
1. From the Editor's Seat: Thoughts on Science and Skepticism at the Dawn of the Twenty-First Century (Kendrick Frazier)

=XII. From Skepticism to Humanism
35. In Retrospect: From Skeptic to Humanist (Robert A. Baker)
This is a wonderful and broad collection of outstanding essays on skepticism and the paranormal. However, in another sense, the situation is sad, in that literature about the paranormal is often divided into two philosophical camps, the literature of the believers and the literature of the skeptics. Most books are either the believers' "WooWoo du Jour" (channeling, UFOs, ghosts, etc.) -- a vast region of thousands of fringe books, or the books are in a much smaller scientific materialist camp of under a hundred books. And sadly, neither camp SERIOUSLY considers the literature of their rivals. For example, athough right 90% of the time, skepticism often ends up throwing the baby out with the bathwater, as in native herbalism cures sometimes classified these days as "Alternative Medicine."
The fact is, whether one believes in such things or not, these things are embedded in human culture over thousands of years, and mythological thinking is part of how the human mind thinks...that is the key. One should not lump together the deceivers and outright hoaxes, with the self-deluded or cases of paradolia, as skeptic literature often does. People seek meaning and pattern in all times and all cultures. Until/unless scientific materialism can merge its accuracy and veracity with some kind of meaning/philosophy that can fulfill the human needs for myth and emotion as well as intellect, it will not succeed in replacing the myths of this age or any other. The great thing about the late Carl Sagan, is that he was one of the few scientific materialists/skeptics able to communicate in an emotionally resonant way the kind of mythic narrative that is needed, as in his immortal Cosmos: Carl Sagan (7 DVD Set) series.
Personally, I am a subscriber to the "Night Eyes-Day Eyes" philosophy, that reality is the same thing, there is both a sun in the sky and there are stars in the sky (and the sun is of course a star as well!) but which one you see depends on whether it is day or night. But they are both always there, whether we see them or not, because reality is always liable to reason. Belief and reason based on empiricism are not incompatible, but need to inform each other to achieve veracity.

The Encyclopedia of Biblical Errancy Review

For those of you who are interested in an actual evaluation ofthe book then by all means read this review. If you would prefer tosimply read about people preaching their religious views on-line then skip this review.
The Encyclopedia of Biblical Errancy is certainly controversial. The language is clear and the author is familiar with the subject manner. Most of the Biblical quotations are honest and not out of context. The index is also very good. I generally found the organization of the book to be well done except at certain points where the author needlessly restates an alleged contradiction. The author tends to be argumentative at several points in the text especially his concluding chapter. The book probably would have received five stars if the author had not included the final chapter. [Some of] the basic premise[s] of the book [are] as follows:
1)There are statements within the Bible that when examined together cannot be believed at the same time by the same individual without a gross amount of intellectual dishonesty.... 2) There are statements within the Bible which are violations of scientific principles (besides the miracles) found in astronomy; biology; mathematics; physics; and medicine (among others).... 3) There are certain acts of the characters found within this book, especially God/Jesus, which are ethically questionable and in many cases would easily be condemned as unethical acts if they had been committed by any other individual [such as war, assault and slavery].... 4) The main character God and/or Jesus is assumed by the author to be both incapable of error or contradiction; and unwilling to have ever committed an unethical act.... 5) Based upon these various violations of science, logic and ethics, the author states that the books of the Bible cannot be considered the infallible Word of God. Since God, being incapable of error, would not have given his human instruments incorrect information. Furthermore God would not have acted in such a way that his actions could be seen as morally repulsive. A further problem develops when one considers that God admits to decieving prophets in the past. How would one know if the inspiration one is receiving is God being deceptive or telling the truth? Or if it is God or Satan doing the inspiring? [And so on.] ...Since the Bible cannot be shown in its entirety to be the Word of God. Each statement found within the text must be examined for its truth or falsity and should only be believed if sufficient evidence supports it. The author finds little if anything in the way of supporting evidence to believe the claims found within the Bible are true. The author claims that the errors are so numerous in the text that there is strong reason to doubt that there is any truth to the Bible.

This important new volume is the most comprehensive critique of the Bible ever written. Author C. Dennis McKinsey believes that Americans have only seen or heard the good things about the Bible, without any exposure to its many shortcomings. McKinsey argues that the lack of criticism of biblical writings has wrongly affected millions of people in their beliefs, allowing many to believe the Bible to be the infallible word of God. He maintains that it is becoming imperative not only that the Bible's inadequacies be exposed, but that its negative teachings be corrected. McKinsey thinks the Bible is a deceptively inaccurate conglomeration of mythology and folklore masquerading as a valid picture of historical reality. In "The Encyclopedia of Biblical Errancy", McKinsey strives to tell both the good and the bad of biblical writings with the most comprehensive and thoroughly-researched expose of the Bible's many errors, contradictions, and fallacies. Loaded with thousands of biblical citations, this encyclopedia vividly proves the Bible to be its own worst enemy.

Psychic Sleuths: Esp and Sensational Cases Review

Psychic Sleuths: Esp and Sensational Cases
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ed Nickell has compiled an engrossing collection of crimes that used the help of psychics. Each chapter explores a case that was sensational and somewhere along the investigation a psychic got involved. Most of these cases deal with murders, some are solved and others left opened. However, none of the solved cases were helped by the psychics in any fashion. This skeptical and scientific book shows that the psychics' contributions are often exaggarated or made-up. At the end of the book are several appendices that show how little faith police forces really have in these psychics. If you ever wondered about the claims of psychic crimesolvers, read this book and get the whole story. You won't get it from the psychics.
