Food Journeys of a Lifetime: 500 Extraordinary Places to Eat Around the Globe Review

Food Journeys of a Lifetime: 500 Extraordinary Places to Eat Around the Globe

This book is sooo cool! I have been to many of the places they write about, and find the book to be amazingly well researched. I plan to use it as a travel planner supplement for future trips because you can't get this kind of information out of a regular travel book. Plus, it a great daydreaming tool. One can flip the pages and imagine wonderful places to visit and eat. I especially appreciate the way they cover all types of dining experiences -- it's not just about expensive, 5-star restaurants. Each page contains loads of information that connects the food to the context of the place. These pieces were clearly written by insiders, people who know the area and can guide you to authentic, memorable experiences.

The Andes: As the Condor Flies Review

The Andes: As the Condor Flies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are not many books around on the Andes in english and this one is a beauty. I have been looking for a decent pictorial book on the Andes for many years and finally this one appeared.
Approx 350 photos over the 160 pages in the book show us the many landscapes and varied plant and animal life that exists in one of the greatest mountainous wilderness areas in the world. These photos are all of wilderness, no people, no buildings or anything manmade. The only photo of a person in the book is one of the author on the inside back flap of the book.
The author describes the range from north to south and gives personal accounts of parts of her trips to the areas as well as factual information.
Overall, a magnificent book with great photos and fascinating text. For me personally, I would liked to have seen a few more mountain shots and less animal shots (although the animal shots are amazing and there are still plenty of mountain shots) and the book does not include a shot of the highest mountain in the Andes, Mt. Aconcagua. A larger photo of Cape Horn would have been good too. Small criticisms that stopped me giving it 5 stars, but I highly reccommend it to all lovers of wilderness.

Vermont Farm Women Review

Vermont Farm Women
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I just returned from a Fall Foliage vacation in Ver mont. On a coffee table at a Bed and Breakfast we stayed at, we found a copy of this book. It is the stories of variouss women who own and do the back breaking work of farming. Some have lived on a farm all their lives, others have left jobs in the cities to take on the rigours of farming. These women are not wimps. They are hard working, self-reliant, single minded and full of passion for the farms they work....endless work.
The author's style is both interesting and comelling. This is a non-fiction page turner. It is the most inspiring book I have read in years.

Burning Book: A Visual History of Burning Man Review

I have spent all of today reading Burning Book. A seven-year veteran of Burning Man, I feel like I know a lot about the event, culture and art. HA!
I have learned a lot reading Burning Book, including more information about installations I've interacted with, and even about some I've worked on!
Our project from 2006 gets a page in the book and I am eternally grateful and honored to have placement in this fantastic book. Thank you to Jessica Bruder! This book is a wonderful gift to your community. Kudos to you! You inspire me.

Digital Photography Masterclass Review

Digital Photography Masterclass

From taking the photo, to the finished processed output, this book covers it all - but not in a way that makes it stretch itself too thin. The clear emphasis is on taking great shots, and the way the book is laid out, he breaks it up into sections, each regarding one aspect of photography, and he talks about ways to use it to get improved photos. Then, for each subject, he breaks down a specific picture, and goes over the use of the subject of that chapter in that photo itself, so you can really see how it is used. That is one of my favorite parts of the book. Another part is where other photogs (I assume they are amateurs, but it doesn't discuss) are given an assignment, and then Tom critiques the results, this part is also very helpful. In fact, it becomes even MORE helpful if you take on the assignments yourself, with the goal of incorporating the information in that chapter into your photo taking process.
The next large section is on post processing - the emphasis here is how to optimize the photo, although he does briefly go over more creative things, he just does not get in to too much detail on them, things like superimposing one image on top of another for different effects.
In the last section, he has Q&A sessions with some professional photographersof different genres, and discusses how they went pro, what they enjoy, how they do what they do, and discusses some of their photos with them. This section continues with the Assignments, which I really liked.
Overall I really enjoyed the book, the use of photos in this book was different from any other book I have read so far, it was so much more based on analysis of the image, and why he did what with the photo to improve it, as opposed to a photographer who wrote a book mainly to publish his own photos, or talk about how many awards he has won.
Finally, I would consider myself a very advanced amateur photographer, I am quite well versed in f stops and shutter speeds, and I pulled a great deal of information from this book; and at the same time, I would give this book to a beginner photographer without hesitation, as I think it can help a wide range of skill levels. No book can make someone a great photographer, but this book most definitely (if you actually apply its information) make someone a BETTER photographer.

Where To Go When (Eyewitness Travel Guides) Review

Where To Go When (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Two years ago, the producers of the PBS series, Globe Trekker, released a tie-in book similar in approach to this one called Globe Trekker's World: What's On in the World...and When. Travel writer Joseph Rosendo takes the same approach of presenting a global calendar of must-see sights, events and unique festivals. Granted the paperback Globe Trekker calendar guidebook is half the price, but this has the advantage of the glossy, luxuriant look of the DK Eyewitness Guides adapted into a coffee-table book format full of their superb color photography. As the consulting editor, Rosendo has designed the book specifically to overload the reader's visual senses with exotic images that whet an appetite for further investigation.
Whereas "Globe Trekker" is targeted more to the backpack adventurer, this book encompasses a broader spectrum of experiences, for example, what to do for five days in March during the Fallas Festival in Valencia, Spain, or four days in July during the Calgary Stampede, or ten days sailing in Kerala, India, in December. Not only are there renowned festivals around the world to attend but also more personalized experiences recommended that range from luxuriant trips of romantic fantasy to affordable family getaways. The presentation is smart simply because Rosendo lets the seasons dictate the order of the highlights rather than the geography itself. Each month opens with a two-page spread of thirty key activities occurring at that time around the world of which a dozen are highlighted with greater detail.
Key bits of advice are presented with a couple of lines on such topics as getting there and getting around, what it costs to eat , what to do for a recommended period of time, and even a comment on the local do's and don'ts to avoid being labeled an ugly American. But make no mistake, it's the lush, often dazzling photography that is the draw here, not the relatively cursory information provided. What the DK Eyewitness Guides do especially well is make visual sense of what other guidebooks simply describe in words. This large-format book goes even further in bundling the diverse world of experiences to be had if one ventures forth to find them at the optimal time and with an unlimited budget.

Journeys With the Ice Bear Review

Journeys With the Ice Bear

Kennan Ward:''Grizzlies in the Wild": This is the stuff that gets a "couch potato" out to the campsites! Nature at it's extreme, Indian legend, bears so huge and unique that that they are known far and wide by their names alone. Carniverous and dangerous, the author respects them all. The tenacity of Ward's pursuits and his dedication as a photographer, brings us one of the most inspiring and picturesque books that i've read in a very long time.

Journeys With the Ice Bear is a breathtaking firsthand adventure inot the unforgiving world of one of nature's most extraordinary animals---the polar bear. Combining spectacular photography and insightful writing, renowned wildlife photographer and author Kennan Ward captures the essence of the harsh yet remarkable lives of these great wandering ice bears. Chronicling his many excursions near and into the Arctic Circle, Ward describes in vivid detail the severity of such places as Siberia and the wonders he encounters in these remote and rugged environments. Although it is Ward's intimate journeys with the polar bear that are thoughtfully retold, it is his deep respect and admiration for this denizen of the ice that comes shinning through.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Adirondack Moments Review

Adirondack Moments
Average Reviews:

A gem of a book. Buy it for a Christmas present. Buy it for a birthday present. Buy it for yourself.
The pictures are a fantastic menage of the scenery and the seasons of the Adirondacks. The captions are simple but succinct narratives that bring you into the photographs at a different level of enjoyment and understanding. They are not unconnected, superfluous comments.
Do not expect the usual well known icons of the Park. Do expect to be surprised by the simple water fall in the woods, the beauty of the foliage on the ground and the leaves and needles in the trees. All these are photographed as if you just walked out of the woods and the falls came into view, or you looked down as you were walking a path in the woods and saw the beauty at your feet or you looked to the beauty above in the trees and the sky. I felt like I was involved in the journey through the book and not a voyageur from outside.
The total arrangement of the photos, space and captions worked together to provide a 'zen' quality adventure. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to have a book that represents the essence of the Adirondack Park and for anyone who just wants a beautiful book.

Scotland's Coast: A Photographer's Journey Review

Scotland's Coast: A Photographer's Journey
Average Reviews:

Joe Cornish is an english landscape photographer. So he prefer to photograph the coastline of his home island. The first taste was his book "First Light". In his new book "Scotland`s Coast" he consequently shows pictures from the scotish coast. He started in the west moved to the north and finished in the east coast of Scotland. The book takes you to the steep cliffs, wide sandy beaches and rocky coastline in a dramatic sky. His typical style is to take pictures with a wide angle lens. So the pictures shows a great foreground that leads into the wide landscape in the background. All his pictures are made in a magic light with saturated colours. The pictures are published very sharp so you feel like standing behind the camera. If you are interestet in overwhelming Coast Photos buy this book.
But take care, there are no scotish castles in this book. One word to the publisher: Please, use next time a thicker paper this one "feel" so poor.

Here, acclaimed landscape photographer Joe Cornish turns his eye to the magnificent scenery of Scotland's 6,000-mile coastline. Traveling from the Mull of Galloway in the south to the tip of Unst in the northerly Shetlands, from the remote St. Kilda in the Atlantic to the Sands of Forvie National Nature Reserve on the North Sea, he captures all the stunning variety of the Scottish seacoast. Whatever the subject-be it a wide Hebridean vista or fragmented patterns of ice on a frozen beach-Cornish, with his artist's eye and dramatic use of light, reveals it in fresh and startling beauty. Seeing the Light: Optics in Nature, Photography, Color, Vision, and Holography Review

Seeing the Light: Optics in Nature, Photography, Color, Vision, and Holography
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first discovered this book when I asked a physics professor down the hall for an explanation of diffraction and refraction in relation to some daytime sky phenomenon. He handed me Seeing the Light, and before long I coveted the volume. The authors dress down optical physics into explanations that anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of physics can understand, relating optical phenomenon to everyday events and objects. The diagrams and photos help clarify the explanation. And practical, hands-on suggested activities help drive the point home. This book would be great for physics teachers -- or teachers at any level. How about pinhole cameras or illusion drawings for class projects?
